Introducing Glacial Melt: A Soap Inspired by Art and Destruction
Share
Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with the Auckland Art Gallery in response to a unique request — to create a soap that would complement the stunning Olafur Eliasson: Your Curious Journey exhibition held this summer.
Drawing inspiration from Eliasson’s immersive, nature-inspired installations, I designed Glacial Melt — a soap that captures the powerful beauty of glaciers, while also highlighting the tragedy of their demise due to global warming. With a fresh mint scent that mirrors the cooling elements of the ice, soaps, like the glaciers, also melt over time.
Using indigo powder as a colourant, I used a layering technique to mimic the striated effect of the glacier photos in Eliasson's series. The scent is a combination of spearmint and lavender, though the floral is to serves only to anchor and enhance the mint, and is almost undetectable in the final profile.
This collaboration was more than just an artistic project; it was an opportunity to showcase my own brand ethos in something tangible. As a creator committed to sustainability, Glacial Melt represents my dedication to crafting products that not only care for your skin but also honour our planet.
The exhibition's focus on the human experience of climate change mirrors the values I strive to uphold in my brand — treading lightly, reducing environmental impact, supporting ethical practices, and prioritising sustainable ingredients and packaging.
I’m so happy with this creation, and I'm pleased to also now be offering this soap on my website. It’s a perfect reflection of the power of art to reflect life and bring beauty to everyday moments.
My thanks to Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, for this fantastic opportunity.
